What is an Ovarian Cystectomy?
An ovarian cystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove non-cancerous ovarian cysts while preserving the healthy ovarian tissue.
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on or within the ovary. Many cysts are harmless and resolve naturally, but some can grow larger, cause pain, disrupt menstrual cycles or lead to complications such as torsion or rupture.
Ovarian cystectomy surgery aims to:
- Remove symptomatic or persistent ovarian cysts
- Relieve pelvic pain or pressure
- Preserve ovarian function and fertility where possible
- Prevent complications associated with large or complex cysts
At Transform Femme, ovarian cyst removal is typically performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques for faster recovery and reduced scarring.
What Happens During Surgery?
Ovarian cystectomy is usually performed under general anaesthetic as a laparoscopic (keyhole) procedure.
During surgery:
- Small incisions are made in the abdomen
- A laparoscope (a thin camera) is inserted to provide a clear internal view
- Surgical instruments are used to carefully separate and remove the cyst
- Healthy ovarian tissue is preserved wherever possible
The cyst is removed through one of the small incisions and sent for routine examination. The incisions are then closed with sutures or surgical glue.
As this is a day case procedure, most patients return home the same day once fully recovered from anaesthesia.
Is Ovarian Cystectomy Right for Me?
Ovarian cyst removal may be suitable if you:
- Experience ongoing pelvic pain or discomfort
- Have a cyst that is growing or not resolving naturally
- Have irregular bleeding linked to ovarian cysts
- Are at risk of ovarian torsion
- Have been advised that surgical removal is appropriate following scans
This procedure is generally recommended for non-cancerous ovarian cysts. If there are concerns about malignancy, further specialist assessment will be required.
A consultation with one of our gynaecological surgeons will determine the safest and most appropriate treatment plan for you.
- Relief from pelvic pain and pressure
- Preservation of ovarian tissue and fertility where possible
- Reduced risk of torsion or rupture
- Minimally invasive approach with smaller scars
- Faster recovery compared to open surgery
Most patients return to normal activities within a few weeks following laparoscopic ovarian cyst removal.
As with any surgical procedure, ovarian cystectomy carries potential risks, including:
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Damage to surrounding structures (such as bowel or bladder)
- Ovarian scarring
- Recurrence of cysts
- Anaesthetic-related risks
These complications are uncommon, particularly when performed by experienced surgeons. During your consultation, all risks and benefits will be discussed clearly so you can make an informed decision.
