What is Salpingo-Oophorectomy?
Salpingo-oophorectomy is a surgical procedure that removes one or both ovaries and one or both fallopian tubes. When both ovaries and both fallopian tubes are removed, the procedure is medically known as a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO).
This combined surgery may be recommended for:
- Ovarian cysts or masses
- Endometriosis affecting the ovaries and fallopian tubes
- Recurrent ovarian torsion
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Risk-reducing surgery for certain genetic conditions
- Suspicion of ovarian or tubal pathology
In many cases, removal of the fallopian tubes alongside the ovaries may reduce future ovarian cancer risk, particularly in higher-risk patients.
At Transform Femme, this procedure is typically performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery), allowing for smaller incisions, reduced discomfort and faster recovery.
What Happens During Surgery?
Laparoscopic salpingo-oophorectomy is performed under general anaesthetic.
During surgery:
- Small incisions are made in the abdomen
- A laparoscope (camera) is inserted to provide a clear view of the pelvic organs
- The ovary or ovaries and fallopian tube(s) are carefully detached
- The tissue is removed through one of the small incisions
- Incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue
If both ovaries are removed and you have not yet reached menopause, surgical menopause will occur. Your surgeon will discuss hormonal implications and whether hormone replacement therapy may be appropriate.
Most patients return home the same day following monitoring in recovery.
Is Salpingo-Oophorectomy Right for Me?
This combined procedure may be suitable if you:
- Have ovarian disease affecting both the ovaries and tubes
- Experience severe or recurrent endometriosis
- Have been advised to consider risk-reducing surgery
- Have persistent pelvic pain linked to ovarian pathology
- Have completed your family and are not planning future pregnancies
If fertility preservation is important to you, this will be discussed thoroughly during consultation before any decision is made.
A personalised consultation with our specialist gynaecological surgeons will determine whether this surgery is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
- Removal of problematic ovarian and tubal disease
- Reduced risk of recurrent cysts or torsion
- Potential reduction in ovarian cancer risk
- Minimally invasive laparoscopic technique
- Short hospital stay
- Faster recovery compared to open surgery
Many patients experience significant symptom relief and improved quality of life following recovery.
As with any surgical procedure, risks may include:
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Injury to surrounding organs
- Adhesion formation
- Hormonal changes if both ovaries are removed
- Anaesthetic-related risks
Your consultant will explain all risks, recovery expectations and long-term implications clearly so you can make an informed and confident decision.
