What is a Salpingectomy?
A salpingectomy is a surgical procedure to remove one or both fallopian tubes. It is commonly performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques and is typically completed as a day case procedure.
Salpingectomy may be recommended for several reasons, including:
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Persistent infection or damage to the fallopian tubes
- Hydrosalpinx (fluid-filled tube)
- Endometriosis affecting the tubes
- Risk-reducing surgery for certain genetic conditions
- Permanent contraception
The procedure removes the affected tube while preserving the ovaries and uterus unless additional treatment is required.
At Transform Femme, salpingectomy surgery is performed by experienced gynaecological surgeons using advanced laparoscopic methods for faster recovery and minimal scarring.
What Happens During Surgery?
Salpingectomy is carried out under general anaesthetic.
During the procedure:
- Small incisions are made in the abdomen
- A laparoscope (camera) is inserted to visualise the pelvic organs
- Surgical instruments are used to carefully detach and remove the fallopian tube
- The tube is removed through one of the small incisions
If only one tube is removed (unilateral salpingectomy), the remaining tube and ovaries continue to function. If both tubes are removed (bilateral salpingectomy), natural conception is no longer possible.
Most patients return home the same day once fully recovered from anaesthesia.
Is Salpingectomy Right for Me?
Salpingectomy may be suitable if you:
- Have experienced an ectopic pregnancy
- Have chronic tubal damage or infection
- Have been diagnosed with hydrosalpinx, when removal of the distended tube reduce pain and improves success of IVF treatment.
- Are considering permanent contraception
- Have been advised to reduce ovarian cancer risk
- Experience persistent pelvic pain linked to fallopian tube pathology
A consultation with one of our specialists will assess your medical history, reproductive plans and overall health to determine the most appropriate treatment option.
- Resolution of symptoms related to damaged or diseased tubes
- Reduced risk of recurrent ectopic pregnancy
- Effective permanent contraception (if bilateral)
- Potential reduction in ovarian cancer risk
- Minimally invasive laparoscopic approach
- Short recovery time
Most patients return to light activities within a few days and resume normal routines within a few weeks.
As with any surgical procedure, salpingectomy carries potential risks, including:
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Injury to surrounding organs (bowel, bladder, blood vessels)
- Adhesion formation
- Anaesthetic-related risks
Complications are uncommon when performed by experienced surgeons. Your consultant will explain all risks clearly and provide personalised advice before surgery.
